Moses

Oh Moses
did you know about the history of the future
of the stones you would bring
to the teeming peoples of your culture?
How could you have known
that when you brought them
the word
of your god,
that they would think themselves gods—
that they would hurl those same stones
bleeding, bleeding
at those who looked,
felt,
loved,
dreamed
differently than they?
Oh Moses,
did you know?
Did you do it all on purpose?
Oh Moses,
didn’t you know what it was to lie?
And didn’t you know what it was to hate?
You, Moses,
didn’t you know what it meant?
