She Came to Spite Her Mother

“Intimidation becomes you”
She says to me from behind broken eyes,
Spinning in gauzy chiffon and lace,
A roguish grin upon her face.

When she showed up in Amsterdam,
No thought to what the world would care,
She sought me out to mend her soul,
And find someone to make her whole.

But when night fell and crickets sang,
She fell to shadow once again,
And broke her mother’s dreams in half,
And flew back home on her last laugh.
