The Whore

For your unyielding eye I come to look,
And naught but love could lack your sight and you
Have seen, but what you think of me I took
For starry nights and German songs in blue.
Your lackluster smile beckons among stars—
The believers tarry on gentle hills.
Ah! but look across—the night is ours!
Beyond the bluff sing birds with voices shrill
And night’s cool veil slowly darkens the lamp
You found full of memory and dust—
Come away with me my elegant tramp
For tonight lies before us in blind lust—
Tomorrow promises another day
Tonight life’s darkness pushes sense away.
