Glaciers

How can the world be so
Punishingly beautiful?
So incoherently brilliant?
Exposing itself in inches
To the gaze of a distracted humanity,
Like a drunk woman lifting
The veils of her mortality
To show in glimpses–
At last!–
The backlit gifts of her truth
When,
Looking past herself she sees
Her lover has fallen asleep.
