Trust the Thing That Scares You

Trust the thing that scares you–
That makes you want to run–
The thing that starts and terrifies
And pulls your mind undone.
The fear that stilts your breathing
And the clawing in your chest
Are simply dreams unrealized
Awaking from their rest.

It’s not the raging terror
That sets your heart to fear;
It’s not the long loud waiting
That makes it seem so near–
The fearful thing is quiet,
Waiting for your soul to break,
As it slowly pulls you further
Into your fear and your heartache.

So trust the thing that skitters
For it has no other way
To scare you into movement
And to shake the dark away.
