Spectacle Fruit

There it is,
Limbs splayed,
Spectacle fruit
Ripe for photographs.
What is in us that
Makes us long so
To be seen?
The tableau approves–
It is a good picture–
The posing one
Enveloped once more
Into the folds of community.
The test is passed.
The bonds have held.

You mask your loneliness
With art,
And fashion excuses
Out of other people’s memories.
No god are you,
No island,
Simply another spectacle,
Waiting to be seen.
