Pluto in Your Orbit

Why did you have to break me first?
Why couldn’t it have been love
Light, and breathless,
I would have succumbed.
I would have given you everything,
Called you the names you longed to be called,
Named your eyelashes,
Crested the wide hills of your hair,
Locked my heart in the depths of your palms.
Why did it have to be broken?
Couldn’t you have been nothing
With me,
Rocked gently by the endless and bountiful emptiness that
hollowed us both, couldn’t you
Have promised yourself to a wind
As I did,
Trusting faithless in the promise of oasis
Among a violent desert?
Why did you deny me
When you knew I was water,
Alone in a desert, unmiraged and
unnamed,
unwanted,
Pluto in your orbit.
Why did you have to break me?
Sun in my eyes,
I only wanted to belong to you.
